DAVID SPORT SPLINT with FATHOM & KIDMob, 2016
David Botana (KIDmob Superhero Cyborg Workshop Participant), Ava DeCapri (FATHOM Industrial Designer)
David (age 11) was born with a malformity in his left hand, requiring him to wear an orthopedic splint. In collaboration with KIDmob, Ava and I helped David design a new 3D printed splint with modular attachment system. We designed several 3D printed sports attachments for David, including kayaking, swimming, horse back riding, and NERF gun attachments. We also mentored David on using CAD and 3D printing.
Ava and I developed a 3D printed clip-in, clip-out attachment system using a dovetail and flexures, so that David can easily swap his attachments in and out.
David's Modular Sport Splint with Kayaking attachment is shown to the left. Ultimately, we designed attachments for Kayaking, horseback riding, and swimming, though the primary development effort was on the modular interface between David's splint and the removable attachment.
